Why this matters

Slow-moving stock is not the same as dead stock. The item has demand, but the current rate of sales may not justify its inventory level.

Start with sales velocity

Choose a consistent window, such as 30 or 90 days, and divide units sold by the days in that window. For example, 6 units in 30 days is 0.2 units per day. This is a historical average, not a demand forecast.

Compare stock with pace

Suppose 60 units remain and sales average 0.2 per day. The simple stock coverage calculation is 60 ÷ 0.2 = 300 days of supply at that pace. That long coverage deserves investigation; it does not establish that the inventory will actually last exactly 300 days.

Look at product variants

A black shirt might sell steadily while the yellow version moves slowly. Review sizes and colors separately, particularly when the product-level average hides imbalances.

Check context before acting

Consider product launch dates, holidays, stockouts, listing visibility, discounts, lead times and planned promotions. Compare similar products and appropriate time periods.

Choose a response

Possible responses include pausing a replenishment decision, making a listing easier to find, planning a targeted promotion or reviewing price and assortment. Evaluate margin impact before discounting.

Example with numbers

One sample candle has 60 units on hand and sold 6 in the previous 30 days. Its 0.2 units/day pace suggests about 300 days of stock coverage if sales continue unchanged. This is illustrative, not InventoryPulse output.
